Abstract

Abstract

The six vegetables, Amaranthus cruentus, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Lactuca sativa, Telfairia occidentalis, Moringa Oleifera and Abelmoschus esculentus sampled from vegetable beds near Lake Geriyo, Yola, Adamawa state, Nigeria were analyzed for their heavy metals contents using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that all the vegetables contained Lead at concentrations that were far above FAO/WHO permissible limits for Lead in leafy vegetables. The Chromium concentrations in all the vegetables except Lactuca sativa and Abelmoschus esculentus were well above the permissible limits. Cadmium concentrations in all except Amaranthus cruentus were below the permissible limits. Copper, Zinc and Iron were present in all the vegetables at concentrations that were far below their maximum limits. These results suggest that continuous consumption of the vegetables could bring about heavy metal accumulation accompanied by their toxic effects in the consumers.
