Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the role of chloroform seed extract of Psoralea corylifolia against β-cypermethrin -induced testicular toxicity in Albino rats. Healthy male Albino rats were divided in four groups. Group I served as a control and group II, III and IV served as Group II was treated with seed extract of Psoralea corylifolia (400mg/kg bw), group III was treated with β-cypermethrin (12.5 mg/kg bw) and group IV was treated with both β-cypermethrin and seed extract of P. corylifolia for 55 days. At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed and evaluated reproductive endpoints. A significant decrease in the weights of testes and epididymis associated with significant reduction in the testicular daily sperm production and epididymal sperm count, sperm motility, sperm viability, and number of tail coiled sperm (HOS-test) was observed in β-cypermethrin treated groups over controls. In addition, serum testosterone levels were significantly decreased in β-cypermethrin treated group compared to controls. Analysis of oxidative stress parameters indicated that a significant elevation was observed in lipid peroxidation levels with a concomitant decrease in superoxide dismutase , and catalase was observed in rats treated with β-cypermethrin. On the other hand, supplementation of seed extracts of P. corylifolia exhibited reversal effects of selected reproductive endpoints in rats subjected to β-cypermethrin. The present study results suggested that P. corylifolia seed extract protected the β-cypermethrin-induced testicular toxicity in Albino rats and probably via inhibition of oxidative stress and boosting testosterone biosynthesis.
